What to include in a funeral order of service

A clear checklist for the information, memories and practical details your guests need.

Begin with the purpose

An order of service helps guests follow the ceremony and can be kept as a personal reminder. It does not have to contain every word spoken. Decide whether you want a short running order, the full wording of selected readings, or a more substantial collection of memories. That choice determines how much space you need.

Gather the essential information

Write the person’s name exactly as it should appear. Check life dates with the family rather than copying from an unverified message. Add the service date, time and location. If the place has more than one chapel or room, include the specific one. A photograph is optional; a text-only cover can be just as thoughtful.

Agree the running order

Possible elements include arrival music, a welcome, tributes, readings, a period of reflection, a farewell and closing music. Religious services may have a prescribed structure. Do not assume that a generic list matches the ceremony: ask the celebrant, minister or officiant to confirm the final order and the names of participants before printing. The maker lets you rename, add and move sections.

Add memories without overcrowding

A short tribute often reads better in print than a full speech. Paragraph breaks give readers space. Keep the main text large enough for guests to read comfortably, especially in a dim venue. Avoid shrinking an entire speech to fit four pages; use an eight- or twelve-page booklet instead. Review the actual PDF, since the cover shown in the editor is only a layout guide.

Finish with practical information

A thank-you message, refreshments location and any agreed donation information can sit on the back cover. Verify charity names and addresses yourself. If a venue has accessibility or arrival instructions, decide whether they should be sent beforehand rather than printed only in the booklet handed out at the service. Keep a final PDF and an editable project backup in separate safe places.
